Setting up WordPress

How to Set Up Your WordPress Blog

Hey everyone, I’m happy to see you here today. If you’re here, you’re ready to dive into the exciting world of blogging. And what better way to start than learning how to set up your WordPress blog? I promise it’s easier than it sounds. Let’s take a look at it step by step.

Why Choose WordPress?

WordPress is a fantastic platform for bloggers. It’s user-friendly and offers many themes and plugins to make your blog look professional and function smoothly. Plus, it’s great for SEO, meaning you’ll have a better chance of being found by readers on search engines.

Step 1: Install WordPress

First things first, you need to install WordPress on your domain/server. Here’s how:

  • Purchase your domain name.
  • Purchase a hosting package from a reliable provider. We recommend Bluehost, Pressable, Web.com, and DreamHost.
  • Once you have a hosting account, log in to your control panel (all of the hosting companies have one, but they all call it different things – many companies use cPanel, which is pretty simple to use).
  • Locate the WordPress installer section (some companies will set it up immediately if you choose WordPress in the ordering process).
  • Follow the prompts to install WordPress.

There you go! You now have WordPress installed on your domain.

Step 2: Selecting and Installing a Theme

A theme dictates the look and feel of your blog. WordPress has thousands of free and premium themes available to suit any niche. To install a theme:

  • Go to your WordPress dashboard.
  • Navigate to Appearance > Themes > Add New. (You can use this section to scroll through and select from WordPress approved themes, or you can find the developer’s site, download their theme, and upload it into your WordPress installation.)
  • Search for a theme that suits your style and niche. Don’t be afraid to install several to play around with each and see which one fits your style and needs.
  • Click ‘Install’ and then ‘Activate.’

Step 3: Setting Up Essential Plugins

Plugins are tools that add extra functionality to your blog. There are multiple available for just about anything you can dream up. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can always find a WordPress developer to build it for you (check out Fiverr). Here are a few essentials that we love:

  • Yoast SEO: This plugin helps optimize your blog posts for search engines. Just using it will make you smarter about SEO and improve your site without much effort.
  • Akismet Anti-Spam: This plugin protects your blog from spam comments. Of course, there is no perfect solution to spam, but Akismet has been around for years and is the gold standard for WordPress anti-spam.
  • Jetpack: This plugin offers powerful features for your WordPress site, including enhanced security, improved site performance, and plenty of content tools. The just is still out on this one for us. Our hosting provider automatically installs and configures it for you, but sometimes, I think it gets in the way.
  • Smush: This one reduces file sizes automatically, improves your site’s performance, and boosts your SEO. Fast loading images are essential on your site, and Smush finds the best way to make that happen, all in the background, without much tech knowledge.

To install a plugin, navigate to Plugins > Add New on your dashboard, search for the plugin, click ‘Install Now,’ and then ‘Activate.’

Step 4: Optimizing Settings

Next, you need to tweak a few settings. Change these upfront before you start blogging, especially your Permalinks, as changing them later will take a lot more work than you probably want to dive into.

  • Go to Settings > Permalinks and select ‘Post name.’ This makes your URL structure SEO-friendly.
  • Go to Settings > Reading and decide what your homepage displays.
  • Go to Settings > Discussion to manage your comment settings.

Managing Your Blog

Now that you’ve set up your blog, it’s time to customize it and start posting content. Don’t forget to check out the Widgets section, as this will allow you to insert small blocks of data already formatted into sidebars, headers, footers, etc.

When you’re ready to create your first Page/Post, navigate to Posts > Add New or Pages > Add New on your dashboard, and you’ll see the editor waiting for your first words.

Follow good SEO practices (Yoast SEO will help) and use keywords in your post titles, headings, and content. Also, remember to fill out the meta description for each post.

And there you have it: you’ve successfully set up your WordPress blog. Now, it’s time to start generating new content. Remember, consistency is key in blogging. And don’t sweat it; you’ll grow over time, get more readers, get better at writing, find new tweaks for your site, and continually improve what you do. We’re excited to join you on this journey and hope we all learn something from each other.

Spread the love
