You’ve reached the obligatory About Me page. Who am I? What do I do? Why you should care?
My name is Matt. I’ve lived a great life and have been writing online off and on in one form or another since the mid-90s. It started with a tour journal for the band I was in – back then we didn’t really have the word blogging, but it’s clearly what I was doing. When I switched gears and started a career in real estate, I dove in even deeper and fell in with a group of early real estate bloggers that helped me learn how to be myself when typing on a blank screen.
As my career continued, I dove deeper into blogging for real estate – I wrote multiple blogs for various sites, including my own, and learned even more. I had always built websites, but thanks to WordPress, I could build one in about 10 minutes. So build I did. For myself, for others, and sometimes for no one – always looking for something new.
I have always wanted to write a book and I think this website is going to be the impetus to finally get to it. I have two books I want to write that have been brewing since the early 90s. Maybe it’s time. I’ll keep you posted.
This website, Being Broke Is No Joke, started it’s life as an experiment with niche blogging, affiliate marketing, and utilizing some of the new AI tools that have been popping up faster than I can catalog them all. I love AI and I think there is a lot there – yeah, yeah, SkyNet and all that. There are fears, I admit. Mine mostly revolve around the music world and song writing, because of my former life as a touring musician. (Side note: my opinion is that live music will become more important, and expensive, than ever before.)
After building this site and seeing some of the issues I had built into it because I wasn’t sure of how things worked, I was frustrated to see traffic still trickling after nearly 100 posts and countless hours spent on it. I realized my mistakes and decided that I was missing two obvious ingredients: 1) a passion for the topic (mostly finance and advice on how to save money) and 2) me. It was a very anonymous feeling site.
I had stopped writing with feeling and got away from the original lesson I had learned at my first blogging gig – be yourself.
So, nearly a year after I launched this site, I deleted everything and decided to start again.
I want to help others learn about the ins and outs of blogging. Both for their enjoyment and for profit. My goal is to turn this website into something that funds itself and puts a few dollars in my pocket.
